Half-speed cutting is a process in which both the source audio and the cutting lathe run at half their normal speed, allowing for significantly improved high- and low-frequency reproduction beyond that of conventional-speed cuts while preserving the unique characteristics of analog records. The result is exceptional analog sound quality that cannot be replicated by digital streaming, high-resolution audio, or CD playback. Metropolis Studios performs its half-speed mastering using a custom-modified Neumann VMS80 analog cutting lathe—one of only a handful in the world.
