The artistic development of Brandt Brauer Frick from their debut album You Make Me Real in 2010 to this year’s watershed Miami has been thrilling to watch. The rigid formula of their early work (techno arrangements, acoustic instruments) has given way to a more catholic approach to music making, all the while retaining the tactile, polyrhythmic elements that make the trio’s sound so immediate.
The group’s entry to the DJ-Kicks series gives them the chance to further showcase their many talents; this time as curators and DJs. Wary of the sterility of some computer assembled mixes, they opted to record the mix live, during a daytime session at the legendary Berlin club Watergate, using all vinyl. As the mix contains eight previously unheard exclusive tracks (three new Brandt Brauer Frick productions and five from the group’s artist community), they pressed up special vinyl dubplates of material for the mix, once again prizing a human, hand-held aesthetic even while collecting an essential batch of edgy electronic music.
