5 track EP by Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) and Damon Reece (Spiritualized, Massive Attack, Lupine Howl). Pressed on black vinyl, housed inside a single sleeve jacket and printed inner sleeve. Limited to 8000 copies worldwide.
Sun’s Signature is the current project from vocalist Elizabeth Fraser and percussionist Damon Reece. Life and musical partners, their eponymous debut EP is released in 2022 through Partisan Records. Highly evolved, yet simultaneously primal - it’s an utterly original, compelling and genre-defying collection of songs that has developed through an Alice in Wonderland journey through life and music.
Elizabeth needs no introduction. The unforgettable voice of the Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil’s haunting, epic cover of “Song to the Siren,” she is internationally recognized for her vocal contributions to Massive Attack’s trail-blazing Mezzanine LP - most notably their biggest hit, “Teardrop”. She has revisited this material live, to devastating effect, on the recent Mezzanine XXI world tour. She has further lent her voice to an eclectic range of projects including Jonsi’s (Sigur Ros) “Cannibal”, Sam Lee’s “The Moon Shines Bright”, and experimental electronic maestro Oneohtrix Point Never’s “Tales From The Trash Stratum”.
Writing and recording together, Elizabeth and Damon have also provided the soundtrack for Graham Duff’s TV miniseries The Nightmare World of H.G. Wells.
Damon, the long-time drummer with political art-rock giants Massive Attack, spent the ‘90s as a member of Spiritualized and Echo and the Bunnymen. He has also recorded and performed with Baxter Dury, Goldfrapp, The Flies, Butch Vig’s 5 Billion in Diamonds, and even virtuoso violinist Nigel Kennedy. A highly creative drummer, Damon is also a multi talented generator of all things musical and, furthermore, has taken charge of engineering duties for much of this EP.
These rich artistic adventures have all fed into the challenge of Sun’s Signature which has been gently gestating and fermenting in parallel. Damon admits that, “We had to go down many, many different avenues to find what we were looking for.” Perfectionist by nature, the story of Sun’s Signature is the journey to find a harmonious artistic space in which to exist, given the backdrop of all the things you have been known for by so many, for so long. The labyrinth of preconceptions, historical baggage, the passing of time and changes in the culture, life and the world generally - they can form a disorienting and mesmerizing barrier when you decide to embark on something new
