Inspired by Nordic folklore, Swedish newcomer Murex blends classic dream pop and Björk-like eccentricity with local traditional sounds on her debut album, working with Isak Hedtjärn, Elvira Anderfjärd and Pelle Westlin.
Broadly attacking the idea of selfhood, Murex dissasembles her personality on 'Inventio', addressing body dysmorphia and heading directly towards some form of liberation. And her cocktail of influences is particularly unique; the title is named after Bach's Inventions that she played on piano growing up, and the specter of baroque music feeds through the record. But at the same time, there's the unmistakable sound of kulning, the Nordic herding calls that introduce 'Heladas'.
Probably the best comparison is Björk, but Murex does her best to provide her own formula here, twisting the skittering productions with her own distinct ingredients where possible. On 'Hardness of a Silverspoon', her kulning cries are split with Bach-like organs and disorienting synths and on 'Puddle', her voice is dimmed to a faint coo, paired with breathy woodwinds and blurry Oklou-style arpeggios. Lead single 'Flock of Swans Fly in V's' might be the best place to start; led by shrill FM staccato plucks, it sounds like ethereal trance stirred with sacred music. Nae bad at all.
