Third is Portishead’s most self-assured and astonishingly original LP. By drifting away from the trip-hop stylings that won them their fanbase, the band showcased a form of creative liberation and perfection. From the krautrock electronic mastery of The Rip to the industrial chug of Machine Gun, it is no surprise that the chapters of Third have gone on to influence everyone from Thom Yorke to The Weeknd. When it first dropped the album was seen as somewhat overambitious but as the record settled, listeners soon realised that Portishead had presented the most breathtaking work of their catalogue. One of the best rearrivals in the history of British music.
